Linda earns her wings! – May 2014

You may have read Linda’s exposition of the Wings For Life event at Silverstone in an earlier Post. This consists of a run of an unlimited distance whilst a chasing car gradually catches the participants. Once overtaken the runner drops out. The last runner to be caught is the winner. Here’s Linda’s account of her day …

Not at the back …

Sunday May 4th. Today’s the day. Wings for Life World Run … How come nobody from running club is doing it? Not very well publicised? Too many other runs on this weekend? Too expensive? Too tough? Have I over committed? Oh well it’s for charity – spinal cord research … Just don’t be last – or rather first … to get caught by the catcher car, that is.

Breakfast? Check. Garmin? Check. Water? Check. Snacks? Check. Over-the-top disclaimer form? Check. Let’s go …

Wings 1

Parking – easy. Not that many cars. Registration – wow no queue. That was quick. Nice and sunny but chilly. Time to give up my bag … and my extra layers of clothes … Freezing… Why is Silverstone always so windy? Off to the track …  My goal is to reach 10k before I get caught. Is that expecting too much, I wonder? The car will be doing 15kph. Shouldn’t take long to catch me then.

I’m in the pink 10k band. Ooh quite a few people in the 5k band … so I’m not at the back … yet … Oh look there’s Mark Webber …  in the 20k band … Quick warm up and we’re off …
Wings 2Got half an hour before the car sets off … I know I can do 5k before then … Nice track to run on. Not freezing any more … Good pace so far … Spot on, 5k in 30 minutes … Not a PB but never mind that today … OMG the catcher car has set off … Don’t let the car catch up … Don’t let the car catch up … 7k: the loud speaker says the catcher car is at 3k … Exciting … 8k: always tough, this part …  Think about people in wheelchairs. 9k: I seem to be leaving the circuit … I didn’t think I would get this far … Definitely not at the back … 10k: YES!! PB!! I can’t believe it … Quite chuffed about that… Lovely supporters along the way … Keeping me going for another kilometre … And another …  Where are we? … 12k? I’ve never run this far in my life …

Wings 3

Feeling it now … Hamstrings on fire … Where is that catcher car? Oh no, a long hill … Push, push, push … Drop your shoulders, use your arms… Getting slower … Running on empty legs … Where is that catcher car? … Ooh Lots of horn tooting … The catcher car is really coming now … Exciting but I can’t go any faster … Hurrah, here’s the car …  I’m done … 12.4K … Definitely exceeded my expectations … definitely not at the back.
